Sexual
Harassment
My sexual harassment and diversity
training sessions are limited to two-to-three-hours. I’ve discovered that going
any longer than three hours for this tough subject can result in overkill and
some participants will simply turn off. As a result, I’ve developed a very
effective training session that covers both sexual harassment and diversity
issues in three hours.
The key to sexual harassment and diversity training that works is much more than
presenting the information. It’s imperative that attendees understand the
significance of the applicable laws and why court decisions say what they do. My
goal is to get participants to change the way they think about diversity issues.
This is accomplished through part history lesson of the laws involved, court
decisions and what they mean for both the employees and the employer and of
course, part humor. In other words, I “paint the big picture.” I want your
employees to leave the session with understanding of the laws, and a burning
desire to change their behavior.
A basic outline of my sexual harassment training is as follows:
Reports on Sexual Harassment
The History of Sexual Harassment Law
1964 Civil Rights Act and the
original 5 protected classes
EEOC guidelines
Other protected classes
Explaining the EECO Guidelines
Quid Pro Quo
Hostile Environment
Communication Skills (Its not always what you say, but how you say it)
Training Survey (Scenarios)
The Client’s Sexual Harassment Policy
How to Handle the Sexual Harassment Complaint (for supervisors)
A couple of short videos are used in the training. This training can be
structured to be done in two or three-hour sessions.
